Noelle Quinn named first Black head coach for Seattle Storm

Noelle Quinn, the Seattle Storm's first Black head coach, has been appointed. Quinn joins Dallas Wings head coach Vickie Johnson as the only Black women currently leading WNBA franchises. There are also two Black men who have served as head coaches in the league: James Wade of the Chicago Sky and Derek Fisher of the Los Angeles Sparks. Quinn boasts a impressive record - she was a Los Angeles Sparks player from 1997 to 2000.

Brittney griner sentenced to nine year imprisonment in a Russian penal prison

Brittney griner, an American basketball superstar, was sentenced to nine year imprisonment in a Russian penal colony after being found guilty for drug smuggling. The multi-month-long trial has been a geopolitical flashpoint for the United States. Griner was detained in February at Moscow airport. Russian officials had accused her of trying smuggle marijuana oil into her luggage. She denied knowingly attempting to violate any laws, but did admit to packing her vape cartridges with the cannabis oil.

LASparks wins 500th game

The LASparks have won 500 games! Congrats! Congratulations! However, they have missed the playoffs five consecutive times. In response, they made a few high-profile moves over the winter, but their season is still stalling. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking at the team's future:

Players are forced to fly on chartered flight

The WNBA's recent policy of requiring its players on charter planes to fly while they travel for games has caused a lot of controversy. Although it is claimed that the NBA would prohibit this, the WNBA has different rules than the NBA. The WNBA also does not share revenue revenues with the NBA. The charter flight controversy has not been confined to the WNBA. In fact, charter flights have been a major contention point in Major League Soccer as well.
