
USA has a long history in supporting female sports teams. Women athletes are making waves in sports, from Biney to Schmitt and Edwards to Vollmer. Biney
Maame Bijny, an American short track speedskater, won bronze in the Women’s Short Track event of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Schmitt
Allison Schmitt, one the most decorated female athletes in America, spoke out about her struggle with depression. After the 2012 Olympic Games, she was dropped from the national team as well as the world championships. She also struggled to cope with depression. She was even able to fall into deep depression. She had a difficult time competing at the 2016 Olympic trials. Thankfully, her determination to return to the pool was rewarded and she has become a US Olympic swimming champion again.
Vollmer
Dana Whitney Vollmer, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, is also a former world record holder for swimming. In the 2004 Summer Olympics she won the bronze medal and set a world record. She won the Olympic bronze and bronze medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She is a former college swimmer and has trained for many years to be a world-class competitor. Joyner-Kersee
Jacqueline Joyner Kersee (USA) is a former track and field athlete. She won four Olympic gold medals, three gold, two bronze, and two silver. She is an all-time great in long jump and heptathlon. Her many achievements include the 1984 Olympic long-jump title. Joyner-Kersee also won the silver medal in the long jump in 1996.
Evans
Aja L. Evans, a bobsledder, is an Olympic medalist for Team USA. She is also a brakeman on bobsled. She was raised in Chicago where she was an All-American shotputter and a track-and-field City Champion. At the University of Illinois, Evans won a shot put title and was an All-American in track and field. She was an Olympic champion after she joined the 2012 bobsled teams.
Voisin
Maggie Voisin from the United States is a female Olympic athlete. After breaking her leg, she was unable to compete at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. She returned to competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but missed the podium after suffering a torn left ACL. Voisin was unable to compete for eight years due to the injury, but Voisin is back.
Retton
In 2004, Retton was a member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, an organization created by the U.S. government to increase physical activity and encourage Americans of all ages to participate in sports. This council is part of United States Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Public Health and Science. While the bill did not become law, Retton met with its sponsor and helped to drop the proposal.
