Later, she won the Under-21 Championship and the state championship with her local team, Braddock Road bluebelles. She played college soccer at William and Mary University and was a All-American. Ellis earned her awards as a coach even though her playing days were during her early twenties.
In addition to her years as a coach, Ellis has extensive experience in sports management. Ellis has held many leadership positions, including that of the Development Director of the United States Soccer Federation. She was an assistant coach of the U.S. Women's National Team and coached women’s youth teams. Ellis was made interim head coach of senior women's national team in 2012. She served as an interim coach for two matches in 2014 and has a USSF Pro coaching licence.
