The late equalizer for the U.S. women's soccer team was one of the most memorable moments of the tournament. Although it was not the game-winning goal Abby Wambach's header proved to be decisive and precise. This goal will forever stand apart in the history of US women's soccer.
Morgan's future star player
Alex Morgan is one of the top young players in the US women's soccer league. This season, Morgan has scored 15 goals across 16 NWSL games. This summer, she will take the U.S. Team to Mexico for the Concacaf tournament. The last time the US played at this tournament was in Cancun, Mexico in 2010. While the team lost to Mexico in the semifinals, Morgan helped the Americans win the gold medal at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. She also scored the winning goal in the London Olympics against Canada.
Rapinoe's lawsuit against U.S. soccer federation
Five members representing the USWNT filed suit against the U.S. soccer organization in April 2016. They sought equal pay for the exact same work. They claimed that they had been treated unfairly due to their gender. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received the complaint. A federal judge sided against the federation in May 2020, and dismissed most of their unequal pay claims. On appeal, women filed an opening statement in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Dunn's debut Olympics
Dunn's inclusion as a U.S. woman's soccer player was widely expected and celebrated in Rockville Centre Maryland, where she resides. It was a symbolic end to her World Cup absence and the beginning of a new chapter of her soccer career.
Rapinoe's 3rd Olympics
Megan Rapinoe works as a forward with the United States team. In 2009, she returned to the team and was part of their first World Cup. Rapinoe was able to send the ball back to Abby Wambach just before the game was finished in 2011. She was part in the Olympic team that won bronze medals in London in 2012.
Team USA's performance during Tokyo
Team USA's performance during the Summer Games has been positive. The men's basketball team won gold in Tokyo, the women's volleyball team claimed their first Olympic gold, and the women's 4x400 meter relay team took home their first-ever gold. Allyson Finch has now won 11 medals in her career, while the U.S. women’s track & field team won indoor volleyball's first gold.
